A Guide To Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

I’ve never done a guide to anything before because it wasn’t something I had an interest in. As of late, I started to think of all the times I went online to find information on places I wanted to visit but not much information is provided. I will try my best to present as much information as I can about my trip to Mystic Mountain.

One of the best things about being Jamaican and living on the island is having the opportunity to say “I live where you vacay”. Not just that, but I also have an opportunity to share the experiences of my beautiful little island with you all. Speaking of sharing experiences, I signed up on the Travel Noire app at the beginning of the pandemic in Jamaica (March 10, 2020) and I met a group of ladies who loves to travel as much as I do. We moved to the conversation from the app to WhatsApp where a group called “Travelling Sisters” was created. Through that group, I had the opportunity to meet Lydia. We communicated for months and she made a decision that she wanted to visit Jamaica in December.

She landed on the island new year’s eve and I welcomed her with open arms. She was supposed to stay at an Airbnb but they weren’t answering their phones so she cancelled and stayed at my house from Thursday to Monday. That’s when I signed up to be an Official Tour Guide in 2021, haha.

Why should I visit Mystic Mountain? When is the best time to visit? What should I wear? What’s the cost? Is it worth my money? These are some of the questions that people ask and I will provide the details below.

Mystic Mountain is located 3-5 minutes outside of Ocho Rios town and it is one of the top attractions in the area. Their rides and attractions include the SkyExplorer chairlift which gives a beautiful sea view of Ocho Rios, the famous Bobsled ride, the Raggamuffin ride, the Zipline Tour, the Anancy Web, Reggae Rock climbing, Infinity Pool & Waterslide and ATV riding. They also have restaurants and a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs at ridiculous exchange rates.

Upon arriving at Mystic Mountain, you have to visit a gazebo where they check your temperature and sanitize your hands. You are then sent to another gazebo where they check for your reservation and have you sign a safety/disclaimer form (Please read this form and don’t be like me). The next step was to collect bands from the front desk area or pay (in case you didn’t pay online). After receiving the band, your adventure starts. It takes about 15 minutes from the ground to the Pavilion where you are greeted with Jamaican history, music and cheerful employees.

If you have bags that you do not want to walk around with, you can pay $US5.00 to rent a locker or the equivalent in Jamaican currency. As for rides, you should definitely try EVERY ride and get your money’s worth. Also, for the Raggamuffin ride, you should ride on #4, it gives you a different “razzle-dazzle”.

Walk with your food because, like their gift shop, the food is expensive. They are literally catering to mostly tourist since Ocho Rios is a tourist destination. Another suggestion if you do not want to buy their food or walk with yours, you can get affordable meals in the town after you complete your day of adventure. That doesn’t mean starve yourself.

I don’t have much knowledge on the peak and low seasons but I would not recommend it whenever it rains. The SkyExplorer has no form of covering so if it’s rains, you get wet for about 15 minutes and if it’s sunny, please to wear your sunscreen. I know as Jamaicans we have little to no interest in the weather but check it before you take on this adventure.

There are two types of people in this world; the people who are going to dress like they are going on an adventure, and others who dress like they are going to a fashion show. You should definitely wear what you are comfortable in but I am suggesting sneakers, especially if you are going to do rock climbing and the zipline tour. You can wear your swimwear under your clothes or you can change in either the bathroom or changing area, whatever makes you comfortable. The ideal outfit is sneakers, t-shirt and shorts but you can swap out the shorts for leggings/tights.

The local price is different from the international price. I paid $7,500 JMD which included the SkyExplorer chairlift, Bobsled, Reggae Rock climb, Raggamuffin and access to the waterslide and infinity pool. I paid at the front desk even though I could have paid online and received a $150 JMD discount. Lydia, who is an America citizen, paid US$80 for the same thing. Her initial cost was US$85 but she paid online and received a US$5 discount.

I do not remember the price for the Zipline Tour or the ATV ride but you can check their website for more details.

If you’re a person who is interested in adventure and having fun, it will definitely worth your money. This is actually my third time there but it is my first time paying out of pocket and it was worth my money.

There you have it! If I’m missing any information, please leave it in the comment section below.

God bless!
